Mehdi Farahani

Mehdi Farahani (October 22, 2004 – October 22, 2022)

Mehdi Farahani, an Arab teenager from Khorramshahr in Iran’s Khuzestan province, was only eighteen years old in 2022. He was at the beginning of his youth, an age that should have been filled with hope, dreams, and the discovery of life. Instead, his story became one of the many tragedies linked to the violent repression of protesters in Iran.
In May 2022, after the collapse of the Metropol building in آبادان (Abadan), which killed and injured many people, anger and grief spread throughout Khuzestan. Demonstrations erupted in several cities, including Khorramshahr, as citizens protested corruption, negligence, and the authorities’ handling of the disaster. Mehdi joined others in the streets to show solidarity with the victims and their families.
As protests expanded across the province, security forces launched a wave of arrests. Mehdi, who had reportedly been identified by intelligence agents, was arrested on August 3, 2022, by forces linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ intelligence organization. After his detention, his family had little information about his condition or whereabouts.
Months later, while nationwide protests were spreading across Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, Mehdi was still being held in detention. According to reports and later testimonies, he endured severe torture during this period.
On October 22, 2022, his body reportedly could no longer withstand the abuse, and he died in custody. Several days later, on November 2, authorities returned his body to his family. Accounts state that the injuries were so extensive that his brother identified him mainly through his clothes and shoes. He was buried quietly in his hometown of Khorramshahr, among the palm groves that symbolize both the beauty and suffering of Khuzestan.
Later, the Ahwaz Human Rights Organization reported that Mehdi’s body had been found alongside that of another teenager, Ali Bavi, who was seventeen years old.
For many people, Mehdi Farhani’s story became a symbol of a generation that demanded dignity, justice, and freedom, but faced imprisonment, violence, and death in return. His memory continues to live on in the voices of those who remember him and in the unresolved calls for accountability and human rights in Iran.
