Maria Ghavvasieh (August 1, 2001 – November 5, 2022)

Maria Ghavvasieh was born on August 1, 2001, in Shiraz, Iran. She was the only child of her family, and from an early age, life confronted her with profound loss. At the age of four, she lost her father in a car accident. Eight years later, when she was only twelve, her mother passed away after a battle with cancer. Left to face the world alone, Maria endured hardships that few children her age could imagine.
Yet sorrow never extinguished the light of hope within her. Determined and resilient, she continued her education despite every obstacle, dreaming of one day attending university. Those who knew her remember her as a vibrant, energetic, and optimistic young woman whose courage and kindness inspired those around her.
Music was her refuge. Before her mother's death, and with her encouragement, Maria secretly learned to play an instrument at the Ava Music Academy in Shiraz. Music became more than a passion—it was a language through which she expressed emotions that words alone could not convey.
According to published accounts, Maria also participated in the nationwide protests of November 2019 and was arrested. Three years later, when protests swept across Iran again in 2022, she chose not to remain silent. She joined countless other young Iranians who took to the streets demanding change.
According to these accounts, Maria was arrested during a protest in Shiraz on November 5, 2022, and transferred to Adel Abad Prison. Reports claim that she was subjected to severe abuse and torture while in custody and died only a few days later. However, different accounts vary regarding the exact date and circumstances of her death, as well as what happened to her body. These reports have not been independently verified.
One sentence, attributed by former cellmates to Maria as her final words, has remained deeply etched in the memories of many:
"I am so alone that even if I die, no one will come looking for my body."
Maria's name is often remembered alongside that of her cousin, Pegah Ghavvasieh, a 19-year-old from Shiraz. According to published accounts, Pegah also lost her life during the same period of protests. Witnesses reportedly saw the two cousins together shortly before Maria's arrest. For many who remember them, Maria and Pegah have become inseparable symbols of a generation whose hopes and aspirations were cut short.
